Book Review: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

Wow—what a massive improvement from A Court of Thorns and Roses! The pacing is still slow in some places, but the character growth, world-building, and emotional depth make this book absolutely worth the read.
One of the biggest highlights? Seeing Tamlin’s true colors exposed. His controlling, suffocating behavior is fully laid bare, making it clear that his love for Feyre was more about possession than partnership. Where he was once painted as a brooding but romantic hero, we now see his controlling and suffocating nature in full force. In contrast, Rhysand—who was once portrayed as dark and mysterious—steps into the light, revealing his true self and the found family that surrounds him. Oh, Rhysand—swoon. Sorry, Team Tamlin, but Rhysand is where it’s at! This book gives us everything we didn’t know we needed from him: respect, freedom, vulnerability, and a family that embraces Feyre for who she is, not what she can do for them.
His inner circle—Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Amren—steal the show and add so much heart and humor. Rhysand’s FAMILY—The quartet of mischief and mayhem, the “Batboys” & the shining beauties who are as deadly as any of the males, if not more so; add so much depth and warmth to the story. Their dynamic creates a strong sense of belonging, something Feyre desperately needed after the trauma she endured. The slow-burn romance between Feyre and Rhys is masterfully written, filled with tension, growth, and undeniable chemistry.
Feyre’s journey of healing and rediscovering herself is beautifully done. Watching her grow stronger, regain her independence, and fall in love with someone who truly values her is incredibly satisfying.
Another highlight of the book is Nesta’s journey. Though she remains prickly and distant, the seeds of her redemption and reconnection with her family are planted here. The relationship between Feyre and her sisters, particularly the way they begin to mend their fractured bond, adds another emotional layer to the story. Nesta, is explored more deeply, setting the stage for even bigger developments later.
ACOMAF is a stunning sequel that takes everything A Court of Thorns and Roses introduced and elevates it to a whole new level. The pacing, while still slow in some places, is much improved from the first book, allowing for richer character development and world-building.
Overall, A Court of Mist and Fury is a vast improvement over its predecessor. The writing is stronger, the emotional stakes are higher, and the characters feel more alive. While some parts still drag a little, the payoff is more than worth it. If you were unsure about continuing the series after ACOTAR, this book will absolutely change your mind.
Much love and many blessings,
Mrs. B
