A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)– Updated after I read A Court of Mist & Fury
Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses is a lush, enchanting fantasy that blends elements of Beauty and the Beast with fae lore, romance, and intrigue. The story follows Feyre Archeron, a mortal huntress who is thrust into the magical and dangerous world of Prythian after killing a faerie wolf in the woods. As she adjusts to life in the Spring Court, she finds herself entangled in a slow-burning romance with Tamlin, the High Lord, while a deeper, darker threat looms over the fae lands.
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is Maas’ world-building—Prythian feels both whimsical and menacing, with its courts, creatures, and magic system woven in beautifully. Feyre’s journey is compelling, and her character’s struggles with survival, trust, and love feel authentic. However, the pacing, especially in the first half, is quite slow, with much of the story focusing on the gradual development of Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship. While this allows for deep emotional buildup, it can feel drawn out at times, making it harder to stay fully engaged.
Despite the slower start, the last third of the book picks up dramatically, bringing action, suspense, and high-stakes challenges that make for a thrilling finish. The introduction of characters like Rhysand teases intriguing dynamics that promise even more excitement in future books.
Overall, A Court of Thorns and Roses is a beautifully written fantasy with an immersive world and a compelling romance, though the slower pacing in the beginning holds it back from being a perfect read. For those who enjoy atmospheric storytelling, fae lore, and a mix of romance and adventure, it’s definitely worth diving into! And if you have trouble reading it, try the audio book instead.
Much love and many blessings,
Mrs. B
